Locations & benefits
Yorkshire and the Humber
Achievement gap
Yorkshire and the Humber have more people than the national average who self-classify as White British. However, regional averages hide the details of more localised data. Cities such as Bradford and Leeds have many bilingual students, and students whose first language is known or believed to be other than English. FSM eligibility is slightly lower than some other regions, but varies by Local Authority.
The region has 15 Local Authorities in total.
Snapshot
Yorkshire is the largest county in the British Isles and is regarded as the greenest of all counties with the vast Yorkshire Dales, Peak District and North York Moors in addition to five bustling commercial cities. Wherever you are based within the region, you are never far from the countryside so participants take advantage of an enviable mix of urban and country activities. Whilst the quality of life in Yorkshire is excellent, the cost of living is reasonable and affordable. The major centres of the region have many developments aimed at young professional city dwellers.
In your first year the Regional Training Provider responsible for secondary PGCE provision is Sheffield Hallam University, in partnership with the University of Huddersfield and the University of Hull. Primary provision is through Leeds Metropolitan University.
As part of the Leadership Development Programme in Yorkshire and the Humber, you have an opportunity to complete a Masters – both the QTS regional assignments are delivered at Masters level. If you choose to complete additional university modules, you can earn an impressive MA Education (Teach First Leadership) from the University of Manchester.
A few fun facts about this region:
- Sheffield is England’s greenest city with 150 woodlands and 50 public parks. Over 44% of Sheffield residents live within a 5 minute walk of a wood!
- The city of Leeds has less summer rainfall than Paris or Milan.
- Sheffield is home to Europe's largest shopping and leisure complex, Meadowhall – with over 400,000 people through the doors every week
- The Bradford Mela is the most important Asian cultural festival outside Asia
- The Leeds Festival attracts 70,000 contemporary music fans
- The Hull Truck Theatre company was named one of the UK’s 10 best theatre companies – one of only two outside of London to make the list
Whether you end up in West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire or Humberside you will never want for things to do.
What our participants say about the region
“The Yorkshire cohort has developed really close friendships and professional support because we are a smaller region. It is exciting to be one of the first years in the region because we’re responsible for embedding the programme in the region.”Beth Ashton, ’09 cohort, Hinde House 3-16 School, Sheffield
“Yorkshire is brilliant because of the quality of life. Lively but friendly and beautiful cities. Interesting and funny children in the classroom. Excellent university support. We are a really close knit participant community.”Ben Karlin, ’10 cohort, Firth Park Community Arts College, Sheffield
