East Midlands

Achievement gap

The East Midlands has a relatively low regional average for Free School Meal (FSM) eligibility and ethnic diversity. However, regional averages hide more localised data that show large variations between urban and rural areas. In general, key cities such as Nottingham and Leicester are more diverse, with many bilingual students, and students whose first language is known or believed to be other than English. The cities also have higher levels of students eligible for FSM.

The East Midlands has 9 Local Authorities in total.

Snapshot

The East Midlands is an exciting region that is providing many opportunities for our teachers to make real differences in our schools. The smaller size of this Teach First region has resulted in incredibly strong bonds and friendships between our entry-year cohorts. The schools we work with really reflect the diversity of the region. From multi-cultural city schools, to former mining community schools and some more suburban city schools facing the challenge of raising the aspirations and achievement of the students, the need is great throughout the region. As part of the Leadership Development Programme in the East Midlands, you have an opportunity to complete a Masters – both the QTS regional assignments are delivered at Masters level. If you choose to complete additional university modules, you can earn an impressive MA Educational Leadership (Teach First) from the University of Warwick.

A few fun facts about this region:

  • The land beneath Nottingham is riddled with constructed caves dating back to medieval times. The entrance to the most fascinating, readily accessible cave is inside a shopping centre.
  • Leicester hosts the largest Diwali celebrations outside of India.
  • Leicester was one of the last places in the UK where milk was supplied to Primary Schools in third-of-a-pint glass bottles.
  • Nottingham County FC is the world’s oldest professional football club.
  • The gigantic Major Oak that is the legendary hideout of Robin Hood and his merry men still stands proud in Sherwood Forest.

What our participants say about the region

“Teach First promotes an esprit de corps and this is very apparent in the East Midlands. Knowing we’re all there for each other makes this challenge seem just that little bit more achievable.“
Karl Edwards, ’09 cohort, Djanogly City Academy
“I was keen to move out of London after university and being quite outdoorsy I chose to move close to the Peak District. The East Midlands is a small region so you’ll know everyone’s name in no time. They weren’t lying when they said we would all come to depend on one another, whether it’s swapping lesson plans or being cooked a meal after a hard day and not having to do the washing up yourself!“
Heather Roberts, ’10 cohort, Kirkby College
