Our LD Programme

The Leadership Development Programme

Teach First is all about becoming a leader and achieving success – both for yourself and for others. It’s an intensive two years. Beginning with the Summer Institute, our Leadership Development Programme combines working, qualifying and training as a teacher with leadership development training, coaching and mentoring, and a range of networking and internship opportunities. Through completion of your PGCE, you will also gain credits which you can put towards a Masters qualification. Upon completion of the programme, you will then graduate to become a Teach First Ambassador.

    Regional training & support

Teach First’s training is delivered both nationally and regionally. After your Summer Institute, your initial teacher training will continue throughout the first year with your University based Regional Training Provider. Your wider leadership development will also take place on a regional basis, allowing you to establish strong networks with participants and tutors in your region and share experiences and best practice.

You will work towards a Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) throughout your first year on the Leadership Development Programme. As part of this, you will also gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Gaining a PGCE means that, whatever you choose to do with your career, you can always return to teaching.

Teach First is an opportunity to be different and to make a difference. It’s your chance to be part of something very special and we expect a great deal from you in return.

The first priority is for you to acquire the skills and confidence to take your place in front of a class of students and begin making a difference to their lives. Teach First will give you those skills – delivered through some of the leading education institutions in the country – and will be there with support and coaching as you find your voice and style in your school. Throughout your first year the focus will be on  completing your initial teacher training and achieving your PGCE.

Throughout the two years, you will also develop your wider skills as a teacher and leader, laying the foundations for whatever you choose to do after Teach First. And once you’ve successfully completed the two-year programme, you will graduate to become an Ambassador and gain access to the many opportunities and benefits associated with this.

Benefits

During the Leadership Development Programme you will be employed by the school where you are placed, and not by Teach First. Your salary, benefits and terms and conditions will therefore depend on where you are placed. However, first year salaries range from £17,657 to £21,731 with London schools at the higher end of the scale.

As well as participating in one of the most valuable and prestigious graduate development programmes around – and knowing that you are part of a powerful movement for social change and making a real and lasting difference to the children you teach – you will also benefit from:

  • Intensive teacher training leading to a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)
  • 13 weeks holiday per year
  • Ongoing leadership development, coaching, business training and skills workshops
  • Opportunity to pursue a part-funded Masters qualification
  • Full time paid position for a minimum of two years
  • Access to professional development and network of supporters
