Zeenia Anwar (’05) Biomedical Science, St Georges Hospital Medical School
Taught Science Cardinal Pole Catholic School
Now Portfolio Manager, RBS

My name is Zeenia Anwar and I studied Biomedical Science at St George’s Medical School. I taught Science at Cardinal Pole in Hackney for two years and now I am a Portfolio Manager at the Royal Bank of Scotland.

I myself went to a very challenging school and the pass rate for 5 A-Cs at my school was about 27%, which is quite low. I remember being at school and thinking that these teachers are trying so hard for people like me, part of the minority.

I felt I could be on the other side of the fence and I could be there and I could help children that were in my position that wanted to learn, wanted to better themselves. And I wanted to be one of those teachers to push those children.

I think it clicked for me as a teacher at the end of my second term during my first year. I think it happened without even realising it. Because you are so busy and you are so involved and engaged in everything you do.

Suddenly I walked into a lesson and I didn’t feel anywhere near as nervous as I had felt beforehand. I just walked into the classroom, I had this amazing lesson prepared and all the kids were engaged on these leaf patterns, it was brilliant. And half way through the lesson I remember thinking ‘oh, I think I’ve got it!’.

If you want to stretch yourself and become a person you never thought you could in your wildest dreams, do it, apply for it. You’ll have the two best years of your life.

Recruitment & Selection

Recruitment & selection

Are you the kind of person who could make an impact in one of Teach First's challenging schools? You'll need bright ideas, gritty determination, awesome communication skills and the confidence to stand up in front of 30 teenagers, engage their attention, deflect their jibes and lead them on a journey. It’s a big ask.
