Stacey McCarthy (’08) Ambassador
Studied History & German, Oxford
Now Transport for London
I was interested in the Primary Scheme because of the fact that it just seemed so obvious to me that educational disadvantage can be tackled at a really early stage instead of leaving it until secondary school.
One particular boy in my class left after my first year. He was very shy. He wouldn’t look you in the eye when you spoke to him. A couple of weeks later I had a big A4 envelope delivered and inside it was a massive collage that he had made of where he was in Wales and he’d written an essay about what his school was like and who his friends were. It was that moment that really made me realise just how positive an experience he must have had in our class to have even thought of us two or three weeks into a new life.
I really, really miss the dynamic environment of the classroom. And I just miss the hilarious things that children say and the fact I’m never ever bored when I’m in a classroom.
I’m still very involved with Teach First. This year I have been a mentor for the HEAPS programme. It’s very good to be reminded that you’re doing it to address educational disadvantage.

It’s a big ask.
