Nathan Hume (’07) Ambassador
Studied PPE, Oxford
Now Director, Starna Scientific Ltd
I went to a careers fair to find out about finance. A very nice lady came up to me and said “Come along to our presentation about Teach First.” I went along that evening and saw a very emotive video. I had done some teaching in the past and I was inspired by it. I thought I’d like to give it a go. It was two years, so I can see how that goes. I thought it was a win/win situation.
The massive gains from teaching are all the soft skills that you develop in the classroom such as, building of rapport with students, the ability to establish authority, the ability to scan what’s going on and, of course, organisation and communication skills. All of these are directly applicable to business and managing other people in other areas of life.
The most important piece of advice that I could give would be to persevere; to be there every day. Treat every lesson like a new opportunity, and once your students see you turning up, no matter how hard a time they’re giving you, you’ll start to turn corners and make a real difference for them.
Recruitment & Selection
Are you the kind of person who could make an impact in one of Teach First’s partner schools? You’ll need bright ideas, gritty determination, awesome communication skills and the confidence to stand up in front of 30 pupils, engage their attention, deflect their jibes and lead them on a journey. It’s a big ask.
At the heart of Teach First is a unique two-year Leadership Development Programme. Challenging, stimulating and practical, it has been designed to develop your leadership skills, giving you the ability to adapt to new or changing situation and inspire enthusiasm and ambition in the classroom.
As a Teach First Ambassador you will be part of a network like no other – a group of influential leaders in education, policy, business and the third sector, united by shared experience, benefiting from its ongoing support and contributing to its mission.
