Mohammed Imran Noorgat (’03) Computer Science, UCL
Taught ICT Loxford School of Science & Technology
Now Director, The Student Centre

My name is Mohammed Imran Noorgat. Before I signed up and joined the Teach First progamme I graduated with a bachelor’s in Computer Science from UCL. I taught ICT and also Computing.

From the skills I actually learnt from Teach First, I took that on board and started my own business and run a tuition company.

I remember on the first day literally being in the classroom, having everything prepared, all the resources prepared, the whiteboard filled with information in terms of what we were going to do that lesson. And then the bell rang and everything in that plan disappeared. And it was like: I am going to be in charge of a classroom now of 30 students and I don’t have a clue who they are. And it was a bit scary.

Having gone through that and actually seeing it’s not that bad, and seeing how the students can actually take in what’s being taught and really appreciate you being there as a firm, solid teacher – not a replacement teacher actually being there. And them appreciating you made it so much more worthwhile.

I went through some low points. They were usually to do with getting control of certain classes, making sure getting work out of them. I remember in part of our training we did a week at a Canterbury School. And I remember spending I taught one class for five hours split across a day, so the afternoon of one day and the morning of the other. And I remember thinking in those five hours I taught more to that class than I could teach one of my classes in a term.

Unfortunately there are lows in teaching. But then when you overcome that barrier and you see the change, that’s when the high comes about. And then it’s a high, high.

Recruitment & Selection

Recruitment & selection

Are you the kind of person who could make an impact in one of Teach First’s partner schools? You’ll need bright ideas, gritty determination, awesome communication skills and the confidence to stand up in front of 30 pupils, engage their attention, deflect their jibes and lead them on a journey. It’s a big ask.
