Mervin Kissoon (’06) Ambassador
Studied Fine Art, Oxford
Now D&T teacher, London
I was attracted to the immediate impact that Teach First offered; the idea that you could go straight into the classroom and make a difference to children’s lives. I was also really attracted to the idea that there was a lot of flexibility, there were other options to make impact on a wider scale, in terms of education and other sectors within leadership.
The first day I had a really, really tough Year 9 group, and they could definitely smell fresh blood. And as a result, I was really, really nervous. I didn’t get much sleep. But I thought I had something up my sleeve and I really needed to engage them. They were a little bit rowdy, they were waiting for the first moment, and I just said to them, “OK guys, what would you do if I said that you were going to be making an iPod speaker today?” And they went, “Oh no, Sir, you’re joking.” I pulled out my phone and just plugged in a ready-made one and automatically they knew they could trust me. They knew that I meant business.
I’ve just let go one of my Year 11 students as he’s finished his exams. To see that he’s got this vision of studying at UCL and studying Architecture is just incredible. It just makes all the work worthwhile; all the Saturdays, all the hard work. To have that vision at that age, and to have that kind of determination, is when you really realise that you’re making impact on these kids.
