Taught Science
Now Returned to teaching after Deloitte
Everything in Science is relevant in one way or another and it’s just cracking exactly what it is. What is the link between this topic and these children? That’s one of the first things you have to work out.
Another major problem with teaching Science is the fact that you’ve got all of this practical equipment. You want to get the kids as involved as possible, but you want to try and do it fairly safely.
I used rugby as an opportunity to get involved with some of the more boisterous boys. It really helped to break down barriers and to allow them to see that I wasn’t just their teacher; I was also a normal person. It made things a lot easier inside the classroom. Having an impact inside the classroom and outside the classroom are interlinked.
I’ve moved back into teaching from Deloitte because of the responsibility the job gives you. You can put your own personal twist on things and you can make the job your own. The kids are obviously a huge part of it. They help to keep you on your toes. You’re always going to be busy and enjoying the job.
One of my former A Level students has just signed up to the Teach First programme, and he quoted me as being his inspiration for joining. I think that’s the highlight of my career so far.
Recruitment & Selection
Are you the kind of person who could make an impact in one of Teach First’s partner schools? You’ll need bright ideas, gritty determination, awesome communication skills and the confidence to stand up in front of 30 pupils, engage their attention, deflect their jibes and lead them on a journey. It’s a big ask.
