I feel very comfortable presenting in front of large audiences at Rolls Royce, which has been quite useful to me. When you’re a teacher you can’t always immediately get someone to do what you want them to do so you’ve got to find different tactics to challenge different mindsets. It’s just the same in business. Everybody thinks differently and everyone has different views based on their experiences so you use some of those skills regularly on a day to day basis to win people round and come to a common agreement.

My piece of advice would be to go in with an open mind. Schools are rapidly evolving. There are lots of things that have changed in recent years and there are loads of opportunities to go in and make a difference. Also make the most of the Leadership Development Programme. It’s a great opportunity to meet people, hear about different industries and really build up a network.

Are you the kind of person who could make an impact in one of Teach First’s partner schools? You’ll need bright ideas, gritty determination, awesome communication skills and the confidence to stand up in front of 30 pupils, engage their attention, deflect their jibes and lead them on a journey. It’s a big ask.
