Anisa Lunat (’09) Ambassador
Studied Philosophy, LSE
Taught Religious Studies
Now Head of department, Religious Studies
The school that I went to as a student was a Teach First school. I think I was in a position to empathise with the girls much better and I had a good understanding of what educational disadvantage meant. I also applied because of the leadership development programme. After I left university, I don’t think I was the finished product, so I felt the leadership development programme would be the best opportunity for me to grow and develop as many skills as I possibly could.
My initial experience was quite different to the experiences of other Teach First participants, because the school that I was going to teach at was my previous secondary school. The first few days when I started were really weird. I was going through all the different corridors that I used to walk through as a student. I was going into my old classrooms, seeing the seat where I used to sit at and now I was having to take on a completely different role and stand at the front.
I am currently in my second year of the Teach First programme, and in February I was appointed to the position of Head of RE. That was unusual in my school because I had just become a qualified teacher and had to manage teachers who have been there a long time. It has been a challenge. On a day-to-day basis I have to build my credibility. I am currently in the position where I’m line-managing my former Head of Year and also my old RE teacher.
My highlight was one of my students who was targeted a D and yet she came out with 100% on her paper. That was the point where I realised that the hard work that I am putting in is really making a difference.
When you wake up you know that no two days are ever going to be the same. Teach First has really kept me on my toes and has made sure that on every step of the way I’ve always been challenged and there’s always been the opportunity for me to grow and develop.
