TF Mentoring Way

3 As of the mentoring programme

  • To raise Aspirations of higher education amongst the targeted students and support as many of them as possible to get into Russell group universities.

  • To raise Attainment and confidence more broadly of the students.

  • To offer Advice that reflects the true ability of the student yet valuing an individuals right to choice

Vision

The vision of this programme fits into the Ambassador Programme vision which is: To empower, equip and mobilise a growing network of Teach First alumni (Ambassadors) to support the Teach First Mission and drive forward sustainable change in education from both inside and outside of the classroom.

What is a TF HE Mentor?

A Teach First Mentor is a Teach First Ambassador who provides two Gifted 6th Form students from a TF City Challenge school with support, advice and encouragement on the journey of getting to University. The mentor should communicate high expectations, be a good listener, bring out the strengths in the student and offer encouragement and understanding.

Expectations and boundaries

We would expect Ambassadors to:

  • Be CRB cleared before they are alone with the student
  • Be reliable
  • Build a relationship with the students allocated to them
  • Have high expectations of the student
  • Be responsible and aware of duty of care (see Child Protection)
  • Be supportive, encouraging and seek opportunities to praise
  • Raise self-esteem and confidence
  • Model expected behaviour
  • Reflect on previous meetings to track involvement and show progression
  • Ensure closure at the end of the programme in a sensitive and positive manner
