Make a difference to your school
Teach First participants are expected to throw themselves wholeheartedly into the life of their schools and to initiate and support projects that extend well beyond the classroom – whether that’s taking groups of students on field trips that would previously not have been possible, or starting sports and other clubs to engage students and bring a new dimension to relationships with their schools.
Among their diverse achievements Teach First participants have:
- Started rugby and fives clubs
- Launched an in-school farm
- Conducted school elections paralleling the UK general election
- Established book clubs and libraries
- Created a school-wide behaviour-reward currency
- Taken parties of students; to the battlefields of France; to live and work on a farm; and to tour the Houses of Parliament
Teach First participants can have a very significant impact on their schools. Of those who have chosen to stay on in education after the programme, many are already in management positions as heads of department, sixth form or as assistant and deputy heads. Their talent, and the accelerated leadership development Teach First offers, have enabled them to take on new responsibilities very quickly, and to begin shaping the direction of whole schools. In fact, one Teach First participant went on to become the youngest Assistant Head in the country.
